Experience History at Anchuca

Step inside one of the few surviving pre–Civil War townhomes in Vicksburg—just blocks from the mighty Mississippi River, in the city that shaped the turning point of the Civil War and the destiny of a nation.

Since 1955, when Anchuca became the first home of historic significance in Vicksburg to open “for public inspection,” hundreds of thousands of guests from around the world have walked through its doors. Today, self-guided tours are offered Monday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Your visit begins with a 10-minute orientation film, followed by a self-guided exploration of the home and grounds. Along the way you’ll discover:

1. Civil War artillery fragments uncovered in the attic
2. Infantry ammunition and glass bottles recovered from the property
3. Original 1830s skeleton keys passed down by Anchuca’s owners
4. Historic photographs, letters, maps, and more

After your tour, stroll through Vicksburg’s “Old Town,” the city’s earliest neighborhood, where brick streets, gas lanterns, and towering live oaks frame museums, churches, galleries, and antique shops.

General self-guided tour admission is $10 per person. Overnight guests enjoy complimentary self-guided tours following their included Southern breakfast.

For guests seeking a deeper, more immersive connection to the past, Anchuca offers an exclusive, premium tour option led by one of its current owners.

Step beyond the ordinary and experience history in a way few ever do. This private experience goes far beyond a traditional walkthrough, inviting you into the living story of one of Vicksburg’s most remarkable pre Civil War homes.

Led by sixth generation Vicksburg native and current co-owner Sam Andrews, a direct descendant of the first civilian killed during the Civil War in Vicksburg, this unique guided tour brings history vividly to life. Through personal insight and rare stories, you’ll uncover the rich legacy of Anchuca along with the remarkable discoveries made during its restoration. You’ll also have the opportunity to view an extensive private archival collection not on public display, along with behind-the-scenes access to some of the home’s most historic spaces rarely seen by the public. Following your premium tour, each guest departs with a thoughtfully personalized keepsake designed to capture the essence of your exclusive tour of one of Vicksburg’s most treasured historic landmarks.

Intimate, engaging, and deeply authentic, this private tour lasts approximately 45 minutes to one hour. Tours are subject to scheduling availability and are best arranged well in advance by email.
